The Mambo Mural, featuring 23 Mambo posters, creates an interactive world where multiple generations can appreciate and engage with the brand—older generations who grew up with Mambo, and younger ones who can now experience it with a modern twist.
BRIEF: CREATE AN EXHIBITION FOR THE POWERHOUSE MUSEUM USING ITEMS THEY HAVE IN THEIR ARCHIVE. TO ATTRACT MORE PEOPLE TO THE EXHIBITION, YOU MUST INCLUDE AN AR ELEMENT.
CREATIVE PROCESS:
Exploring the Powerhouse archives I discovered a collection of Mambo posters. These connected with me instantly, not only because they represented Aussie surf culture, but also because I grew up always decked out in Mambo gear.
After collecting 23 posters, I experimented with various layouts and visual mappings until I settled on one that best captured the essence of the Mambo world. The final design creates a cohesive landscape while showcasing each character, scene, and style individually.
After finalising the layout, I redrew each poster, reimagined the world, and recoloured the pieces. Adding AR brought the world to life, enhancing the visuals and giving the piece a dynamic, interactive energy.
The project highlight was sharing my work with Reg Mombassa, one of the artists behind 80% of the artworks in my mural! His appraisal made all the hours worth it.
